Competitive Bidding / Bid As Drawn

This can be a tough one, if you have a concern based on design aesthetic or worse…engineering.  What’s the best way to approach this?

Let’s see….

Modified Hammer Beam Design

1.  Bid as drawn with so many comments and notes in the proposal that you think you are covered.

2.  Bid as an alternate, hope they appreciate your attention to detail and concern.

3. Bid it both ways and hope for the best.

What do you think?  In various construction methods, this similar situation must come up.  We would like to hear your thoughts!

I have been a design engineer on over a hundreds of projects over 40 years

When working on a design I always like to be able to know how I will build a project and draw it accordingly.

I realise however that other may have the experience of building things another way or be aware of better ways of doing things. Over the years I have seen many bids that have been cheaper and better than my original designs.

If i was your client the best answer would be 2

Hello Brian, thanks for your comment, much appreciated. Option 2 is typically what we try to offer, glad you agree 🙂
